Beyond Sales — 3 Powerful Benefits of Preorders for Newbie Indie Authors

    • By Katherine Pickett

Guest post by K. Patrick Donoghue

When I listed the Kindle and Nook editions of my second novel, Race for the Flash Stone , to accept preorders, I wasn’t sure what to expect. Big-name authors routinely list their upcoming titles for preorders, and their books-in-waiting always seem to immediately pop onto the best-seller lists. But what could an unknown indie author hope to achieve by employing the same practice? The answer: Whoa, Nelly!

Of course, I hoped accepting preorders for my book would generate sales in advance of the official release, but I had no idea how many to anticipate. I set my expectations low and chastened myself to primarily treat the 60-day preorder window as an opportunity to build awareness of the upcoming release among my Facebook and blog followers. That tempered view quickly changed within days after listing the book for preorders on Amazon and Barnes & Noble’s website, bn.com.

Sales quickly accumulated, and this led to a few unexpected side benefits that continue to accrue as of this writing, two months after the official release date. In short, I received 3 powerful benefits from listing my book for preorders that led to a book launch that exceeded my expectations:

1.     Unsolicited buzz by Amazon and Barnes & Noble

2.     Faster accumulation of reviews and ratings for the new book

3.     Early read on sales level led me to boost advertising investment in first book

Before describing these benefits in more depth, it’s likely of value to provide some brief background to assist fellow newbie indie authors in determining whether my preorder insights are of value.

7 Free Online Tools for Writers and Authors

From Digital Book World:

“All you need to be a writer is a pen and paper,” is something you might say if you’re one of those smug savants who can just sit down and write an entire novel longhand.

But for the rest of us? Well, we can take all the help we can get. Naturally, there are the everyday low-fi accessories that every writer should already have in their arsenal, like notebooks and a reliable pen. But there are also a bunch of high tech tools that the interwebs can offer us.

In this post, I’d love to share seven of my favorite free online tools for writers. They’ve helped me to manage my time, improve my creative flow, and publish better material. And, most importantly, they haven’t cost me a dime!

Why Marketing Your Business Offline Could Be What You Need To Get Ahead

If you’ve been stuck trying to promote your business online for a while, you might be having a hard time getting results.

The truth is, online isn’t the only answer. That’s right – there’s still a lot of money to be made by hitting the streets and promoting your business the good old-fashioned way.

Even if you run a completely online venture, there’s value in looking at how going back to basics could be what your business needs to gain new leads.

While it’s true that having an online business opens you up to thousands (or even millions) of potential customers, and offers huge scope for many businesses, it’s a hugely competitive marketplace. There are literally millions of potential customers, and there are also millions of competitors all fighting for the same piece of the pie.

If you’ve recently tried to rank highly for a particular search term, you’ve no doubt seen how difficult it is. As you’re probably already aware, if you can’t get onto the first page of Google, you might as well be nowhere. The first place on Google can garner up to 34% clicks from all searches for that term. If you’re 11th (first on the second page), you might struggle to get 1%.

This is why going offline can help you get a corner of the market that your rivals may have ignored.

Don’t Know How to Market Your Book? Start in Your Own Backyard

The No. 1 question I receive from writers is “How do I get published?” The most common question after that is: “How do I market my book?”

That first question is far more straightforward to answer, and an easier task for most people. Getting a book published remains a fairly consistent process regardless of who you are, where you live, how much money you have, or what type of book you’ve written.

Marketing, on the other hand, has an incredible number of variables that depend on knowing your reader (your target market) and what resources you have to reach them.

New Bowker Study Finds Increasing Growth in SelfPub ISBNs

If there was still doubt in anyone’s mind that self-publishing is not only viable but here to stay, a new report from Bowker might cement it once and for all. The rate of ISBN purchase for self-published books has increased by more than 218% since 2011, back when the digital revolution arguably took off. The Bowker report, “Self-Publishing in the United States, 2011-2016 Print vs. Ebook,” highlights a number of results that demonstrate just how serious both authors and readers are about self-published works.

“Overall, we believe that these numbers point toward an ongoing maturation and stabilization of the self-publishing industry,” said Beat Barblan, Director of Identifier Services at Bowker in a press release. “Tracking these trends and comparing the numbers over the years provides tremendous insight into this industry. This enables us to respond by offering the best tools and support to independent authors, according to their current needs.”

Lest this mislead anyone as to the state of self-publishing, it’s worth noting that this information refers to authors who purchased their own ISBN numbers–either on their own or as part of a project them completed with the help of a publishing service provider–as opposed to using a free Amazon-assigned number.
