Opportunistic book publicity: Leverage what’s in the news #BuildBookBuzz #h2e

This Friday, June 30, the new comedy “The House” hits theaters in the U.S.

Starring Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler, the movie’s about what happens when parents who have blown their daughter’s college fund start an illegal casino in their basement to generate enough money to cover her higher education expenses. (Hilarity ensues!)

If you’ve written a book on how to pay for college, you should be capitalizing on the buzz around this movie starring two bankable comedians. (More on that in a moment.)

In general, you always want to look for ways to link your book to current events, whether it’s breaking news, celebrity gossip, or, as in this case, a movie that’s getting a lot of attention. It’s about being opportunistic — the opportunity presents itself and you grab it to get book publicity.

How to be opportunistic

But how do you do that?

10 TOOLS THAT HELP ME SELL MORE BOOKS via @KseniaAnske #h2e

As you have probably noticed, I have switched my blog commenting system from native Squarespace to Disqus. And you have also probably noticed that if you hang out on my site for a while, a popup will tell you not to kill me for a popup but instead to subscribe to my fabulous newsletter. This is all part of what I told you I’d do: focus on selling my books. You see, this May 15th it’s been 5 years since I started writing full-time, and though I soared at first (there was lots of interest in my first trilogy, even from agents), I then painfully crashed into the gulch of despair of not-making-money-as-an-author. For a while I waited for something miraculous to happen, as in, somehow magically Rosehead would get on all bestsellers lists and I wouldn’t have to do squat. Well, no miracle happened, and eventually I had to collect myself back together, bone by bone, and climb out (the perfect crisis of the Hero’s Journey, by the way). And now I’m on my way back up. I’m not up yet, but I’m getting there. Because my plan is to:

GET MY SHIT TOGETHER AND START MAKING A LIVING FROM SELLING BOOKS.

To do this I have dusted off my rusty start-up brains, and lo and behold, even though I’ve been only flexing my marketing and selling muscles for two weeks, my numbers are climbing! In the last 4 days, since I put up a popup, I got 14 new subscribers to my newsletter at 12% conversion rate, which is at the top bracket of the industry standard (2-12%). Well then. Let’s see what happens when I get my entire system running. And that is:

The Power of a Book Tweet via @goodereader #h2e

Self-published authors have resorted to “buy my book” tweets for so long that social media is a minefield of useless book commercials. But one purposeful–albeit off the cuff–tweet from an independent bookstore led to an exponential increase in sales.

According to Book Web, Carmichael’s Bookstore in Louisville, Kentucky, reached out to author Shea Serrano after he directed his followers to Amazon. Rather than disparage the retail website, the bookstore’s tweet aficionado simply suggested that Serrano remind his large fan base that indie bookstores could use a little support, too.

Serrano answered the call. He tweeted to his 100,000+ followers to order his book from Carmichael’s, complete with link to the store. Within a matter of hours, Carmichael’s had over one thousand orders for the book, more online orders than they usually receive all year. There were so many orders, in fact, that Carmichael’s had to call in reinforcements from its other locations to help fulfill the orders.

Content Marketing Equates to Visibility and Increased List Size via @kathleengage #h2e

Most experts who conduct business online and offline know increasing their subscriber list size can equate to increased revenues. Increasing your list with qualified leads takes more than simply adding numbers.

It takes a targeted effort including knowing who you want to reach, where they are at, and getting in front of them in a way that establishes your credibility.

It also takes consistent, and ongoing, effort. One of the best ways to position your expertise is through content marketing.

“Content marketing is a strategic marketing approach focused on creating and distributing valuable, relevant, and consistent content to attract and retain a clearly-defined audience — and, ultimately, to drive profitable customer action.” Full article click here.

The idea is to get your content seen by as many people as possible who have an interest in your information.

There are lots of ways to do this with some of my favorite being…

This is the Reason Content Marketing for Writers Matters #h2e

Content marketing.|

It’s not a term most writers are familiar with, likely because anything with the term ‘marketing’ in it makes us want to run away and cower in the safety of our tried and trusty pens and pads. Besides, we are writers. We want to create art. Why do we need to do any…

Cheap MP3 players and audiobooks could be a good promotional tool #h2e

The new Guardians of the Galaxy movie is opening soon, and I’m looking forward to it.|

And the merchandising people are, too. As big a deal was made out of the first movie’s feel-good seventies-and-eighties-music mixtape/soundtrack, it’s not at all surprising that the soundtrack for the second movie was also a big thing well before the next movie hit the theater. But it is a little surprising, not to mention amusing, how cheap disposable MP3 player technology is suddenly playing into this. There’s nothing mysterious or magical about MP3 players. In fact, thanks to dedicated systems on a chip built just for that purpose, they’re probably one of the cheapest gadgets it’s possible to make these days. And that might be what possessed Doritos to put one in a bag of corn chips. (So, the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 soundtrack really is “all that and a bag of chips”!)

That’s right, for just $30 you too could have a bag of chips you could crunch through while listening to songs by Fleetwood Mac, Cheap Trick, and Sam Cooke on a cheap circuit board MP3 player with a rechargeable cell phone battery, 256 MB SD card, and USB plug. (Well, you could have it for about a day until they sold out, anyway. Given that it was effectively a collector’s edition publicity stunt, don’t expect them to be in stock ever again. But they’re going for big bucks on eBay!)

Something a bit less disposable is this cheap plastic replica of a Walkman which also has an MP3 player built in. Apparently it only has room for one song, though. Which makes its $25 cost most places…not all that cheap, really. You’d be better off getting one of these 19 cent mp3 players, a $3.25 256 MB SD card, and the $9.38 soundtrack CD from Amazon (which comes with instantly downloadable MP3s for free), even when you throw in $6 or so of shipping costs for the cheaper items.
