Novellas – Why Readers And Authors Love Them

Novellas – Why Readers And Authors Love Them

What’s a novella? I hear you cry. While most authors are familiar with them, a lot of readers don’t know that what they are, even though they have probably read at least a few. The easiest explanation, simplistic though it is, is that a novella is longer than a short story, but shorter than a novel. The commonly accepted word count of novellas ranges from 20 000 to 40 000 words (although some say 50 000 and I’ll go along with that, as my novella An Affair With Danger is 46 000 words).

Why an author’s platform matters

From Nathan Bransford:

Let’s say you are thinking about writing a book of nonfiction and want to have it published by a major publisher.

The first thing you need to do is assume that every single person in the entire world wants to write a book (which isn’t really an assumption, it’s basically true).

The second thing you need to do is ask yourself if you are the most qualified person in the entire world to write and promote that book. This applies to virtually all nonfiction.

  • If you want to write a cookbook, are you a nationally recognized chef or on the Food Network?
  • If you want to write about terrorism, are you one of the world’s foremost experts on terrorism?
  • If you want to write about an actual event that happened, are you a decorated journalist?
  • Heck, if you want to write a book about extraterrestrial encounters, are you an internationally recognized expert on extraterrestrial encounters?

If the answer to that question is no, then sorry, chances are you’re not going to get your book published by a major publisher. If you can imagine someone out there who is more qualified than you to write a book, then that person probably already has their proposal in front of publishers as we speak.

#Smashwords Announces New eBook Promotion Tool

In the ongoing debate about whether or not to list your indie book exclusively with one retailer, there are a few things that authors have to consider. Chief among the concerns usually falls back on sales: where are your books selling? If readers only come to your book via Amazon, for example, and you literally post zero sales on other platforms, it would make sense to then go ahead and take advantage of Amazon’s KDP Select.

However, a new issue with Select, namely the books’ inclusion in the Kindle Unlimited reading platform, means that authors are currently paid out at around 0.04 cents per page for KU readers, an amount that has been steadily dropping all year. That’s not four cents, by the way, but rather point-of-four cents. That means a 200-page novel will net the author eight cents if a reader finishes the whole thing; even further, an author will only get paid the first time the reader enjoys the book. A number of authors have decided to pull their books from KDP Select for the sheer gamble of hoping that someone would buy the book rather than read it at that rate.

Outlining for Pantsers VIA @WriterUnboxed

That title doesn’t appear to make much sense, does it? You might be thinking, do you even know what those words mean? One is either a plotter or a pantser. If you’re a plotter, you outline. You like to know where you’re going before you set out on your novel’s journey. You may choose to turn right where your outline indicates you will turn left, but that will be a conscious diversion. Order. You must have order.

Pantsers, on the other hand, thrive on spontaneity and the unknown. If you’re a pantser, you just get in the car and drive. You introduce yourself to your characters and let them navigate; you allow yourself to become their instrument. Outlines are like nasal-voiced GPS programs constantly chirping reprimands at you each time you deviate from the pre-approved route. SHUT UP, they make you want to shout. Don’t bother me with directions. I will feel where I want to go.

Every Minute, the Internet Goes Through an Incredible Amount of Content

Neelabh's avatarNeedull in a haystack

How much stuff is getting added to internet every minute? Any guesses. The below picture gives us an idea and it does not mention Whatsapp!

internet_consumption_one_minute

For instance, the collective internet watches 4.1 million YouTube videos every minute, and users post over 46,200 images on Instagram (which must include an absurd amount of brunch photos on Sunday). And if you’re curious about something and head over to Google, you’ll contribute to over 3.5 million searches, which translates to more than 5 billion queries every day.

5 Ways a Book Cover Could Hurt Sales — And How to Fix It

Before launching Sterling & Stone in 2011, we were a trio of indie authors, and our early years were filled with missteps. We wrote furiously, churning out more than 2 million words per year. All those drafts needed to be made into books, but at the start we only had so much time, help, and money. So we did the best we could on our own, including designing most of our covers in-house.

We figured “good enough” was good enough. It wasn’t.
